Easy Fish Tacos with Fries: My Fish and Chips Taco Experiment

Easy fish tacos - my fish and chips tacos recip

Fish and chips. But make it a taco.

Honestly, sometimes cooking does not need a complicated backstory, a 14-stage marinade or an ingredient that has to be carried personally from Oaxaca in your hand luggage. Though it kinda sounds like something I would do. But we are all busy. And we want flavour and crunch quickly.

Sometimes you have proper corn tortillas ready, a few salsas sitting happily in the fridge, some fish, and an idea.

And suddenly dinner becomes fish tacos.

These fish and chips tacos combine crispy fish, crunchy slaw, avocado crema, French fries and habanero sauce inside a warm corn tortilla.

Is this a traditional Mexican taco? I don’t think so, not exactly.

Does it make a ridiculous amount of sense? Here is where I’d say absolutely.

What Are Fish and Chips Tacos?

Fish and chips tacos are easy fish tacos made with cooked fish, fries, crunchy slaw, creamy avocado sauce and hot salsa, all served inside warm corn tortillas.

Think of them as somewhere between British fish and chips and Baja fish tacos.

Classic Baja-style fish tacos are strongly associated with crispy fish, tortillas, cabbage or slaw and creamy-spicy accompaniments.

I have already explored the more traditional direction in my Baja fish tacos and Mexican beach food guide, and I have an entire guide to fish tacos and why they work so well.

This time, however, I wanted chips inside the taco.

Because restraint is an admirable quality, but perhaps not at dinner.

Fish and Chips Meet Tacos

There is also a slightly personal logic behind this combination.

I spent two years living in Gibraltar, one year in Malta and eight years in the UK. So fish and chips are very much part of my culinary memory.

In Britain especially, fish and chips occupy that wonderful territory somewhere between comfort food, takeaway food, pub food and “I absolutely don’t feel like cooking tonight” food. And we’ve all been there!

In my head, fish and chips are probably to Britain what tacos are to Mexico.

Please do not send angry messages from either country. Though please do share your thoughts.

I think both dishes have something important in common: they can be extremely simple, extremely satisfying and infinitely more interesting when done properly.

So why not?

The Secret to Really Easy Fish Tacos

Here is the part I think people sometimes miss when they start cooking Mexican food at home.

You do not need to make absolutely everything from zero every single time you want tacos.

I love making tortillas.

I love making salsa.

But the clever thing is to make those building blocks in advance.

If you already have:

  • real corn tortillas
  • avocado crema
  • a good salsa or hot sauce
  • some slaw or cabbage
  • perhaps a jar of pickled onions

then taco night becomes assembly rather than a major cooking project.

My guide to making real corn tortillas covers the tortilla part, while my Mexican Salsa System gives you sauces you can prepare and reuse across multiple meals.

This is also basically the philosophy behind my Taco Craft system: prepare good components, understand what each one contributes, then combine them in different ways.

That is how you get from:

“I can’t be bothered cooking.”

to:

“Apparently I’m running a tiny taqueria from my kitchen.”

And that happens, to you and me, quite quickly.

Easy Fish Tacos: What You Need

This is more of an assembly formula than a strict recipe, so adjust quantities according to hunger and enthusiasm.

For approximately 4 tacos:

The Base

  • 4 fresh corn tortillas

The Fish

  • Around 250g cooked white fish
  • Crispy, battered or fried fish works particularly well here

The Crunch

  • A generous handful of cabbage slaw

The Creamy Bit

  • Avocado crema

The Chips

  • A handful of hot French fries

The Fire

  • Habanero hot sauce

My Recommended Add-Ons

  • Fresh lime
  • Coriander
  • Pickled red onions

And that is basically it. No 27-ingredient shopping list required.

How to Make These Fish Tacos

1. Get the fish hot

If you’re going for the full fish-and-chips experience, I like the fish to have some crunch.

Use freshly cooked fish or whatever crispy fish preparation works for you. Ypu can make it in beer batter, coat with breadcrumbs like a schnitzel or dust it with a cornflouir for an extra crunch – it all works.

2. Cook the fries

Again, we are not writing a doctoral thesis here.

Cook your fries until golden and crisp.

3. Warm the corn tortillas

This one I am definitely militant about. Please warm your homemade tortillas.

A beautiful filling placed into a cold, stiff tortilla is a small culinary tragedy.

If you want to make your own, use my complete homemade tortilla guide.

4. Build the taco

I like this order:

Warm tortilla → fish → slaw → avocado crema → fries → habanero sauce

Then finish with lime and coriander if you have them.

Do not overload it. Or overload it and accept the consequences.

Both are valid approaches to tacos.

Why This Fish Taco Works

This apparently ridiculous taco actually follows a very sensible flavour structure.

You have:

Corn from the tortilla
Richness from the fish and fries
Crunch and freshness from the slaw
Creaminess from avocado crema
Acidity from lime and slaw
Heat from habanero

The fries are especially fun because they make the taco more substantial while bringing another crunchy-soft texture.

And the avocado crema is doing important work here.

It cools the habanero, connects the fish with the tortilla and gives the whole taco enough richness without requiring mountains of mayonnaise.

My Salsa System guide includes my avocado crema and explains how I use sauces like this across fish, shrimp, vegetables and other tacos.

Are These Baja Fish Tacos?

They are Baja-inspired fish tacos rather than a strictly traditional Baja fish taco recipe.

The connection is obvious: fish, tortilla, slaw, crema and chile.

But adding French fries pushes the whole situation firmly into fusion territory.

Which, frankly, is where I am very comfortable.

The Bigger Lesson: Keep Taco Building Blocks Ready

This is really why I wanted to share this very simple fish taco recipe.:

  • Not every taco needs its own afternoon.
  • Make a batch of tortillas.
  • Keep them ready.
  • Make two or three salsas.
  • Keep cabbage in the fridge.
  • Have avocado crema.

Then you can cook one main ingredient, fish, mushrooms, tofu, shrimp, beans, chicken, whatever, and have genuinely exciting food on the table very quickly.

That is one of the reasons I think learning the system behind tacos is more useful than memorising dozens of individual recipes.

You can explore that approach properly in my Taco Craft guide.

Oh, and speaking of tofu, you can absolutely make these tacos vegan – simply replace fish with tofu. It is that easy! Check my previous article about tofu tacos here.

Quick Fish and Chips Tacos FAQ

What fish is best for fish tacos?

A mild white fish is an easy choice. For this particular fish-and-chips style taco, something that stays juicy inside while developing a crisp exterior works especially well.

Can I make these fish tacos without frying?

Absolutely. The fish does not technically need to be battered or deep-fried. Pan-cooked or baked fish works too, although crispy fish gives you more of that fish-and-chips effect.

What sauce goes best with fish tacos?

For this version, I use avocado crema plus habanero sauce. One cools and adds richness; the other provides heat.

Corn or flour tortillas for fish tacos?

Both exist, but I’m firmly in the fresh corn tortilla camp for this one. The flavour of real corn makes the taco considerably more interesting.

Can fish tacos really be quick?

Yes — if your taco components are already prepared. With tortillas, salsa and crema ready to go, most of the work is simply cooking the fish and fries and assembling everything.

My Final Thoughts: Fish and Chips Tacos Are Tasty

After years of British fish and chips and rather a lot of tacos, perhaps this combination was inevitable.

  • Crispy fish.
  • Hot chips.
  • Fresh slaw.
  • Cool avocado crema.
  • Fiery habanero.

And a warm proper corn tortilla holding the whole slightly unreasonable thing together.

It’s comforting like fish and chips, fresh and spicy like a fish taco, and easy enough to make when you absolutely cannot be bothered with an elaborate dinner.

Which is precisely when you need a good taco most.

So let me know your thoughts. Until next time!
